National Service Scheme, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Govt. of India, popularly known as NSS was launched in Gandhiji's Birth Centenary Year 1969, in 37 Universities involving 40,000 students with primary focus on the development of personality of students through community service. Today, NSS has more than 3.2 million student volunteers on its roll spread over 298 Universities and 42 (+2) Senior Secondary Councils and Directorate of Vocational Education all over the country. From its inception, more than 3.75 crore students from Universities, Colleges and Institutions of higher learning have benefited from the NSS activities, as student volunteers.

GITAM encourages its students to join NSS, inspires and motivates them to play their part in bringing awareness in public on various issues.

A.P. State N.S.S. Cell, Higher Education Department, Govt. of A.P., Hyderabad sanctioned 10 NSS units of 100 NSS volunteers each to GITAM and released a grant of 4,75,000/- for conducting NSS regular and special camp programs for 2012-13.

A total of 30 NSS programmes including 9 NSS special camps were successfully organized during the year 2012-13. Total student enrollment to N.S.S. is 3000+.

The following are some of the important programmes organized by the N.S.S. wing:

The NSS Unit 7 (GIM) of GITAM observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, 2012.   The programme assumed importance especially against the background of increase in drug abuse among youth.  The programme successfully created awareness among the student community. 

· The NSS volunteers of GITAM collected and contributed Rs.3,000/- to Indian Association for the Blind, Madurai, Tamilnadu.

· The NSS volunteers, under the guidance of the program officers, put in their concerted efforts and collected Rs. 2,59,470/- to support a case of Leukemia, P. Chaitra Deepika, being treated at CMC Vellore.  This amount was presented to the father of the child by the Vice-chancellor, GITAM.

·  The NSS units of GITAM contributed Rs.1,082/- to Sarvodaya Seva Ashram Samshta, which  provides educational facilities to the poor, downtrodden and orphan students.

·  The NSS wing of GITAM paid a befitting tribute to Mother Teresa by conducting a Mega Blood Donation Camp on her 102nd birth anniversary in which near 500 students donated blood.  The programme was supported by The Indian Red Cross Society and King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam. 

·  In co-ordination with GITAM Health Care Centre, the NSS Unit of GITAM conducted a health camp at Vambay Colony, Kommadi.  The camp was inaugurated by Sri Purnachandra Rao, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam.  Near 500 patients were screened and medicines were dispensed free of charge. 

·  In coordination with Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam, GITAM NSS Wing organized International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 15, 2012 along Rushikonda Beach wherein 145 students participated.

·  GITAM NSS Volunteers helped the organizing committee of GITAM convocation to ensure smooth conduct of the programme on September 15, 2012.  Near 60 volunteers were drafted for this programme.

·  NSS wing of CSE Dept., GIT, in coordination with IEEE Computer Society, planted 600 saplings at Pothina Mallayya Palem, Visakhapatnam. Nearly 150 students took part in the programme on September 23, 2013.

·   The NSS Volunteers of GITAM School of Technology, Hyderabad, collected Rs.8,000/- and the same was spent towards repair and renovation of toilets in Govt. School at Pathancheru, Hyderabad.

·  20 NSS Volunteers extended their help to Brahmakumari’s meet at GITAM Campus, Visakhapatnam.

·  Near 200 NSS Volunteers extended their help to the Indian Economic Association, in organizing 95th Annual Conference at GITAM Campus, Visakhapatnam.

· Near 100 NSS Volunteers extended their help to the Department of Public Health,  Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, in conducting pulse programme at 10 centres where around 1200 children were vaccinated.

·    To create awareness about the rights and responsibilities of youth in exercising their franchise, an awareness programme was conducted on National Voters’ Day i.e., January 25, 2013. Prof. Y. Satyanarayana, Director, School of Law, GITAM gave an expert lecture on the subject.  This was followed by an awareness rally with a participation of 150 NSS Volunteers.

·  In co-ordination with GITAM Dental College & Hospital, GITAM Health Care Centre, the NSS Unit of GITAM conducted a Mega Blood Donation Camp on February 1, 2013.  The programme was supported by The Indian Red Cross Society and King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam.  Near 660 students donated blood.

·  More than 1500 students of GITAM took part in the procession from VUDA Park to Ramakrishna Beach on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary for Swami Viveknanda.  Prorf. G. Subrahmanyam, Vice Chancellor, GITAM participated in the event.  Eminent speakers of Visakhapatnam and RK Mission inspired the youth through their speeches.

·  Near 150 NSS Volunteers participated in the “Kidney Run: Awareness Programme on Kidneys” organized by Apollo Hospital, Visakhapatnam on March 9, 2013

As part of NSS special camps in the adopted villages (Rushikonda, Yendada, Sagar Nagar, Peda Jalaripeta(Slum area), Kobbaritota(Slum Area), Ram Nagar(Slum Area) and Bheemili, during January, 2013 - March 2013, the following programmes were conducted in the 9 NSS special camps:

  1. Clean & Green at holy places and at the adopted parks.
  2. Medical complaints data collection from the villagers.
  3. Free medical camp and free dental camp.
  4. Social and economical data collection.
  5. Awareness programs on anti – alcohol, say no to plastic use, literacy, environment and hygiene, etc.
  6. Cultural and Recreation programmes among NSS volunteers and village youth.
